MOST people would think that nothing good can come out of townships, however a man from Luveve has proved otherwise when he took hip-hop music in the city by storm.
This is none other than Cal-vin whose talent has won the admiration of South African hip-hop star Casper Nyovest.
Calvin told My Bulawayo that working with Cassper Nyovest, who commands a huge following, was his greatest achievement.
“It was an awesome feeling, I still feel wonderful about it now. I am proud because I was able to do collaboration with him prior to him filling the dome. I am happy because I am now counted among his friends. I am happy about the collaboration because it opened me up to a new audience. I am getting interviews from the U.K, Canada and South Africa.” he said.
The 29 year old rapper who attended Mafakela Primary School started his music career in 1996.He used to rap during school prize giving days.
The Z’khuphani hit maker who recently came number 8 on the list of 50 most influential people in Bulawayo has collaborated with a number of artists.
“I collaborated with Capital K a Zimbabwean dude based in the US. I’ve worked with Cassper Nyovest .I would like to work with AKA, Oskido, Oliver Mtukudzi .Currently I’m working on something with Patience Musa,” said the maestro.
The artist who have a great sense of fashion takes after his own father and have since started his own clothing label Grade Street.
“Grade Street is derived from life experiences. I was doing grades at school and spent the most part of my life in the streets elokshini. I have a thing for fashion which I think I got from my father who always had an eye for co-ordinating things. I just like looking good. I enjoy showcasing every talent I have. I do all my designs. The label is not officially out but I am releasing it next year,” he said.
Calvin revealed that he is a God fearing rapper, “Just because I am not a Christian rapper does not mean that I don’t believe in and fear God because I do. Most of my tracks are gospel and you can still hear the spiritual aspect in that I am God conscious.”
As a parting note to the up and coming artists, he encouraged them to market their music, and also to have full control of their material and not to seek validation from other people especially other artists.
“ They need to be confident in their music. And they need to be themselves and most importantly they need to know their worth.”
