Cape Town – Orlando Pirates’ new head coach Kjell Jonevret has revealed that his vision for the Sea Robbers is for the team to become defensively sound.

Jonevret hails from Sweden and has won a league and cup double during his time in charge of Djurgardens in the Allsvenskan in 2005.

Club chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed the 54-year-old had signed a three-year deal after nearly four months without a head coach.

As such, Jonevret explained how he intends to improve the fortunes of the Buccaneers during this period of transition.

“When I see Pirates play, I think we have to start from the back because I think they concede stupid goals and that affects the attack,” Jonevret told reporters.

“We need to go full speed forwards, tight backwards, but Pirates should find its own style.

“It could be nice for the players to listen to a new voice and I’m sure it’s not going to be big things (changes in the team) it will be small things.

“I do hope to be the beautiful bride in this marriage. I’m aware there’s a difference between Scandinavia and here but we will learn from each other.”

The 54-year-old is adamant that in order to restore things at the Mayfair-based club it will require patience because it is no quick fix.

“I can’t tell you the difference between (me and) the coaches who’ve worked here right now but I’m going to do what I normally do and I think that’s the thing that Orlando Pirates want,” he said.

“I’ve seen them play for a few games and there’s a very talented group of players but little less of confidence I think. To start with of course you have to (go) back to basics, and start a little bit all over.

“I’m not going to change everything, I’m going to sit down with the staff and the coaches today and discuss what we can do better.

“I think we have to wait and see. Often football is no quick fix, it takes some time. But of course with the situation Pirates are in now, it’s important we win a game as soon as possible and get some happiness again and laughter in the locker room. I suppose they’re a little bit down there, could be.

“I’m going to continue doing what I normally do and maybe you’re going to find out (what) that (is) later.”- Sports24
